the bluebird! I'm pretty sure. This sweet little bird got the most votes on favorite bird from readers who commented on my last post. And who could blame them, this precious little sky-colored friend that flits by. Runners up were the male cardinal, the mockingbird and the wrens.
And a congratulations goes out to Myrna who was randomly chosen as the winner of Tracie's book. For everyone else, you already know you have my recommendation to order her book...it's a keeper.
And another shout out to the art of journaling. Just thinking how, when I go for a few days without jotting down my thoughts and musings, how they get all jumbled up in my head. How things clear themselves up somehow when pen goes to paper.
For today, that is all. May your Monday be a good one.
I know you've heard all about it...Silver Bella 2008. And it was all that and more. How could there be so many creative, precious, generous people gathered together in one place? Well I don't know how, but it happened. It was my privilege to teach you, to get to know you, just to be with you. I am so honored.
But now I am back home with no more traveling between now and the holidays. Virtually all of my holiday shopping is done online (yay Etsy!), at antique shops or by my hands. If you do happen to see me at the mall it's because my youngest daughter (she's 15) has dragged me by my ponytail saying 'Good grief! why can't you just be a normal mom and love the mall?!' (oh, and speaking of her...you're going to get a kick out of what I discovered in her room this morning...keep reading)
So now I'm in 'snuggling-in' mode. Step one, get the house clean (ugh!). But then I get to decorate, do handmade projects, bake and all those homey things I love to do this time of year (like crochet a scarf for my oldest daughter)...
What do you love to snuggle in and do this time of year?
Okay, don't you dare tell her because she will kill me dead if she even knew I was talking about her on my blog (which she of course never reads)...But this morning I was looking for something in my 15-year-old's room and noticed high up on a shelf these two boxes...
...does anyone else think this is as funny as I do? Her box of "stuff", not to be confused with her box of "things"! Omigoodness, I'm still laughing about it. No, of course I didn't look inside! But I am wondering...how does she decide if an item goes in the "stuff" box or the "things" box? I can just picture her standing there pondering...
Way back when, I worked in corporate America in marketing and advertising. And for several years I tried my very best to fit in and pretend it was a good thing for me. But as you can imagine, it just wasn't.
Anyway, one of my bosses at the marketing firm had me set up a 'swipe file'. A big chunky file where we stashed other ads and ideas we'd see and wanted to keep handy to trigger our own ideas. So if we were trying to come up with a color scheme, for instance, we could go to our color combo swipe file and get some ideas.
I'm sure I learned a lot of things in my years behind a desk, but this swipe file thing is pretty much all that stuck with me.
So I've recently begun my own swipe file (sort of). For example, I do a lot of small textile art pieces. Many times I've done an embroidery technique or whatever, sold the piece and, you guessed it, the technique flew away on the wind like all the ideas that pop into my head.
I keep sketchbooks where I've hand-drawn a lot of my ideas. But I recently began an 'idea cloth'...a piece of linen where I sort of 'draw' with threads and trinkets and come of up with ideas I can later use in my art pieces. And it's evolved into this really cool piece that's come in handy many times for me. Really a big source of inspiration, just looking at it and holding it in my hands.
I went to find a quote for you this morning in my little book where I keep my favorite quotes and words and realized I may not have ever shared a photo of my 'keeper of words' book.
It's an album I put together with an old cabinet card (I call him "Mr. Serious" and love how he reminds me to lighten up a bit), all sorts of vintage papers, repurposed pages and such. Just a perfect way to keep all the words in one place. If I'm reading a book and run across something I want to save, I jot it down in my words book. If I tear out a quote from a magazine, my words book is just perfect for tucking inside. It's been so rewarding to add to it over time. I embellish it a little now and then just for fun. Oh, it just makes me happy that's all. (Note: I made several of these a couple of weeks ago and there are a few left in my etsy shop--free shipping through the weekend).
Oh! here's the quote I want to share for today, and oh boy oh boy does it hit home...
Here's my little vintage suitcase that is usually with me when I'm out-and-about...it stays in the car most of the time so it's there when i need it...
why? well because of what's inside of course...
can't be caught off-guard with idle hands while waiting for football practice to end, getting my car washed, sitting in car-rider line...what? you don't have one? tsk tsk
the journals are coming, the journals are coming...going into my etsy shop at 2:00 this afternoon nashville time (central)...and please please please, if you aren't able to get one...please do not be angry with me because (1) i can make more and (2) they're only journals :)
"I often wonder about the lives before me and the lives that will follow. I wonder what I'll leave behind, if my prayers or my words have been enough, if even one will care to know who I am. We aren't really meant for this earth. Our record is written elsewhere and retold a thousand times. Maybe we're all contained within each story, little pieces found within. All lives eventually found upon the telling."
And something to see from my never-idle hands, small fragments that will eventually make their way into my artwork...
Of course, not to be forgotten...a heartfelt "Happy Birthday!" to Teresa...may she continue to be her amazing, inspiring, sparkling self.
My thoughts are with each of you...may your day be full of beauty (and fun too of course).
